No one ever steps in the same river twice

April 28, 2013

No One Steps Into the Same River TwiceI was at a party last night and someone I had met years ago told me a story just as I was leaving. This is what he said:

I am a writer. And years ago, I re-read all that I’d written and decided to  burn  all of it. I wondered, “what am I doing here?” “Why am I here?” And I thought, the worst thing that could happen is that, as I’m dying, I relive all my memories of not being present to my life, which is most of the time.

As he ended his story, I looked into his eyes and felt my legs wobble, then settle as I landed in the present. I thanked him for his gift and walked out of the party fully alive. How much of the time do you spend asleep, speaking automatically, going through habitual motions, barely noticing one thing after another?

Today I invite you, as I invite myself, to meet each new moment with new eyes, new ears, new mind, encountering even the familiar as if for the first time… because it is.

“No man ever steps into the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” — Heraclitus

Big love,
Naaz
